Our Story

Children, animals, music, memories, community, choices. These are key elements of Doak Walker Care Center's approach to eliminating the loneliness, boredom and helplessness often felt by residents of nursing homes.

In 1979 the hospital expanded its mission to include long-term care at Routt Memorial Extended Care Center. Since 1981, elders at the Center have enjoyed the companionship of children who attend the on-site GrandKids Child Care Center. This intergenerational connection is the oldest program of its kind in Colorado. Infants, toddlers and preschoolers add an element of youthful enthusiasm and spontaneity.

When the center was relocated to the present Yampa Valley Medical Center campus in 2000 along with GrandKids it was renamed the Doak Walker Care Center in memory of football legend and longtime Steamboat Springs resident Doak Walker.  A display of his photos and sculptures chronicling his sports career and life in Steamboat Springs can be found in the center’s lobby.

In 2005 The Doak Walker Care Center was awarded national recognition as an "Eden Alternative Home." Based on a culture that promotes elder preferences and a home environment, the Eden process is a journey that focuses on life and living.
