Prevention. Health promotion. Wellness. Community.  Taking responsibility for your own health. These words capture the reasons why Yampa Valley Medical Center (YVMC) is holding its annual Community Health Fair on October 6. This exciting fall event offers low-cost blood tests, flu shots and free health screenings. Participants can get answers from a variety of health education booths staffed by YVMC employees, local healthcare providers and community volunteers.

The health fair takes place on Saturday, October 6 from 7:30am to 11:30am at the YVMC  campus as well as the adjoining Medical Office Building where healthcare providers will conduct free health screenings. Plenty of volunteers and maps will be on hand to direct participants to their areas of interest. Health screening opportunities include:

-         Low Cost Blood tests

An abundance of health educators and free materials will be available on a variety of topics, including allergy, asthma, autism, blood clot risk, breast health, diabetes, emergency preparedness, hands-only CPR,  joint replacement, living wills, mental health, nutrition, sleep, Spare the Air, tobacco and pediatric therapies.

New this year will be the Weigh & Win kiosk from LiveWell Colorado which offers cash and prize incentives for people who lose weight or maintain a healthy weight on a quarterly basis. Based primarily in Denver, the mobile kiosk that visited Steamboat in July returns for the month of October and will return again in January 2013.  Visit www.weighandwin.com for more information.

At the event, YVMC is launching a dynamic, new, free Smartphone App called iTriage.  With iTriage smartphone users can check symptoms, determine appropriate medical treatment and locate medical providers. Although this app does not replace our Ask-A-Nurse phone service, it does provide medical guidance from the convenience of a cell phone.

“As a partner in the health of our community, we’re happy to host the Community Health Fair,” said Karen McRight, YVMC’s senior director of marketing and business development. “This annual event gives area residents the opportunity to receive a range important preventive services for free or at a reduced cost.”

For your convenience, you can pre-register and pre-pay for the low-cost blood tests online through October 2. Visit the hospital’s website www.yvmc.org/healthfair. By pre-registering you can save some time the morning of the health fair. Remember to fast for 12 hours prior to your blood draw. Drink plenty of water but avoid eating until after the blood draw. There will be free refreshments to fuel you up before you hit the free screenings. The hospital’s Culinary Services team will have specialty coffee drinks and low cost hot breakfast items available.
