A lifelong love of sports and outdoor adventure and a deep connection to Colorado led Michael Sisk to practicing orthopedics in Steamboat Springs. Michael grew up in Rifle, Colorado - a sleepy ranching community where his father was the local family doctor. An all-around student athlete, Michael would regularly participate in sporting events in Steamboat. “I just loved the community,” he said. “I always looked forward to games against Steamboat teams and the opportunity to play those games here. I knew then that someday I’d have a home in Steamboat.”
As a teenager, Michael spent many summers working as a wrangler for an outfitter in the White River Valley. It was there that his passion for rodeo was born. While attending the University of Colorado, Michael joined the rodeo team. Working as a wrangler during the summer months in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, and riding bucking horses on the side, set in motion his dream of attending medical school. “I met so many amazing people and orthopedic surgeons after getting hurt rodeoing,” he said. “I knew that if I were going to be a physician that this was the type of medicine I wanted to practice.”
Michael was accepted to CU Medical School in 1990 and attended orthopedic residency from 1994 to 1999. During that time he was a member of the team physicians for the Denver University Pioneers volleyball and hockey teams and the University of Colorado Buffalos football team.
In 1999 Michael realized his goal of practicing medicine in Routt County when he joined the team at Orthopedics of Steamboat. He has also worked as an associate professor for orthopedics at CU, is a fellow with the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and works as a US Ski Team physician. He and his wife Bryna have three active “Steamboat” children who are much connected to sports and the outdoors just like mom and dad. In keeping his love of rodeo alive, he is a Steamboat Springs Pro Rodeo Series board member. Today, his practice is targeted toward sports medicine, joint replacement as well as foot and ankle trauma and reconstruction.
