Thursday, February 16, 2012 - Doak Walker Care Center recognized as a top nursing home

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, February 16, 2012 -- For the second year in a row, the Doak Walker Care Center at Yampa Valley Medical Center has been listed by U.S. News and World Report as one of the “Best Nursing Homes in Colorado.”

DWCC Administrator Lee Dickey was notified of the listing on February 10.

The Doak received 5 stars, the highest overall rating, from the federal government's Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. A nursing home's overall rating is geared to its performance in health inspections, nurse staffing, and quality of care.

"We are very proud of our team and the compassionate care they provide every day to our residents," Dickey said.

In the fall of 2011 the Doak Walker Care Center was one of 593 nursing homes nationwide from among 5,500 surveyed to win an Excellence in Action Award from My InnerView. This award can be for either customer or workforce satisfaction scores that fall within the top 10 percent of My InnerView’s database.

Two separate surveys are provided – one to residents and families and the other to employees. Within the largest skilled nursing facility database of its kind in the U.S., the Doak won this highest award in both categories, one of just 72 homes (or the top 1.3%) to do so.
Besides the Doak Walker Care Center, only one other Colorado nursing home won both of these awards for 2009, and the Doak is the only nursing home in the state of Colorado to win both awards in two consecutive years, spanning 2009 - 2011.

In a December 2011 survey, Doak residents and families were asked to rate their overall satisfaction with the center as well as their willingness to recommend it to others. For the second consecutive year, responses were 100 percent positive.

"It is gratifying to know that our efforts are appreciated by our residents and their family members,” Lee said. “I attribute these successes to the incredibly caring people who work here and our progress since 2005 as a registered Eden Alternative Home.”

The Eden Alternative is dedicated to changing the culture of nursing homes through the development of meaningful relationships between residents and staff.
